As a farmer, Krista Swanson knows firsthand how demand affects the bottom line. Swanson and her husband, Brett, are fifth-generation farmers who have managed their Knox County farm since 2012. She’s taking her experiences from the farm, and as former research specialist for the University of Illinois Gardner Agricultural Policy Program, to her new position as lead economist for the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA). “I’m looking forward to working on behalf of NCGA and serving the corn industry,” she said. National poll: Promising trends in rural opioid misuse

A survey of rural adults about opioid trends showed rural adults are more aware of and willing to discuss opioid abuse, but also believe there’s a higher rate of misuse within their communities. “We are pleased this new poll shows encouraging signs when it comes to reducing stigma and feeling prepared for tough conversations about addiction, but it also shows that we have more work to do,” said AFBF President Zippy Duvall. FFRI expanding free mental health resources for farmers

From a free helpline and telehealth counseling sessions to a virtual support group, the Farm Family Resource Initiative (FFRI) continues to reach farmers wherever they are. Looking to the year ahead, Program Coordinator Karen Stallman is excited to expand FFRI’s resources by organizing community forums for aging farmers and holding a rural mental health summit in March. “I know it’s very difficult to admit if you’re struggling or you need help, because there’s such a stigma with that.
