Grain futures were mixed on Thursday in early trading on the Chicago Board of Trade. Wheat for Sep. was up 5 cents at $7.2975 a bushel; Sep. corn was off 1 cent at $5.5175 a bushel; Sep. oats rose 6.50 cents at $4.64 a bushel; while Aug. soybeans declined 55 cents at $14.00 a bushel. Climate shocks in Brazil and shipping bottlenecks have pushed the price of coffee beans sharply higher. Starbucks says it won’t be affected for more than a year, but small cafes can’t hold off that long. (New York Times)  

Severe drought in the northwestern U.S. Corn Belt and meager crop conditions have led to lower expectations for the U.S. corn and soybean harvests, but the trade has recently had a high miss rate on USDA’s August projections and the analyst guesses this time have not allowed much room for error. The ever-popular butter cow at the Illinois State Fair is set to be unveiled on Wednesday. Governor Pritzker will be joined by Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton, Illinois Agriculture Director Jerry Costello II, State Fair Manager Kevin Gordon and Miss Illinois County Fair Queen Kelsi Kessler are expected to be in attendance for the unveiling Wednesday afternoon.
