AMMONIA PLANT

Australia’s Incitec Pivot expects its new $850 million U.S. ammonia plant will reap bigger profits than first projected, thanks to a recent string of fertilizer takeovers, cheap gas prices and the sliding Australian dollar. The plant outside New Orleans is expected to start producing in the third quarter of calendar 2016.

FERTILIZER REPORT

The Illinois Department of Agriculture’s Fertilizer Report shows lower prices for virtually all products, except 28%.  The average price for diesel fuel was $2.16/gal.

ACTIVIST GOES AFTER AGRIUM

Activist investor ValueAct Capital Management LP on Friday disclosed a 5.7% stake in Canadian fertilizer giant Agrium Inc. Agrium recently beat back another U.S. activist, Jana Partners LLC, which had sought board seats as it argued Agrium should separate its retail operations.

FERTILIZER CUTBACK

Ten of 12 U.S. farm retail companies surveyed by Reuters say fertilizer sales this autumn are lower than they were last year. GROWMARK’S Joe Dillier told the newswire fertilizer orders this fall have been “non-existent”.

FERTILIZER MERGER

Merger discussions are underway between CF Industries and Yara International.  The AP reports if the two firms get together, they would rival Potash Corp. in size.
