HEAR A BOOM OR CRACK LAST NIGHT? PROBABLY A FROST QUAKE – Those loud booming and cracking sounds you’ve been hearing are a frigid-weather phenomenon called frost quakes, or sometimes ice quakes. Frost quakes tend to occur when there’s been a rapid drop in temperatures following recent rain, Meteorologist Ed Shimon said. The ground expands as the water quickly turns to ice and pressure builds until it eventually cracks and pops. (The News Gazette)
