SMITHFIELD AGREES TO COVER LAGOONS –

SMITHFIELD AGREES TO COVER LAGOONS – After years of saying that it wasn’t economically feasible, Smithfield has agreed to cover lagoons with a thin layer of plastic on more than 1,000 farms in the U.S. The food giant, headquartered in North Carolina, said it will pay farmers to install the plastic, with a goal of covering lagoons that handle waste from nearly all of the company’s finishing houses.
