Elite colleges and universities are working to increase the number of students from rural areas. The gap between urban and rural students has been growing for decades, partly due to admissions biases against rural students with financial needs. In fact, a 2009 Princeton study found that leadership roles in organizations including 4-H, FFA and ROTC worked against students who claimed them on applications and is “associated with 60 or 65 percent lower odds of admission.” (Wall Street Journal)
