EWG’s Craig Cox says the USDA’s CRP program could be leading to an increase in dust storms across the Great Plains. According to Cox, the 10-year leases farmers sign under CRP aren’t long enough to keep ground in conservation, thus allowing farmers to put marginal land back into production and lead to dust storms. Cox believes the government should instead buy 30-year easements in the most environmentally-sensitive areas. (NPR’s The Salt)
