Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has scheduled the cloture vote on Judge Neil Gorsuch’s nomination for the next justice of the Supreme Court for Thursday. At this time, that vote is expected to fail because Republicans don’t have the necessary 60 votes. If that vote fails, it may set in motion the ‘nuclear’ option, with Republicans lowering the threshold for ending debate from 60 votes to a simple majority, killing the possibility of a filibuster for future Supreme Court nominees.
