In a Southern Illinoisan feature, Valmeyer hog farmer Bruce Brinkman talks about his early career raising pigs and how the industry has changed over the years. When he started in 1990, Brinkman first had to deal with the Great Flood of 1993 then a drastic slide in hog prices in 1998. Today, Brinkman raises pigs for another farmer in two finishing houses with a capacity of 3,220 and says one of the biggest challenges he faces is educating the public about raising pigs in confinement.
