Popular buzzwords such as “natural,” “humanely raised,” “cage free,” “grass fed,” and “antibiotic free” are complicating food labels. The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) says it has become more challenging to review and approve food labels – as required by law – as food makers add words to food labels in an effort to grab market share and consumers’ cash. FSIS, along with sister agency the Food and Drug Administration, is in the process of defining “natural” in an effort to make food labels clearer for consumers, as reported by USA Today.
