Few folks in the area know that the Tuskegee Airmen got their start right here in Champaign County, at Rantoul’s Chanute Airfield, in 1941. But thanks to the efforts of Rob Gorham and Robbie Walker, anyone driving into the county will soon be reminded of the first military program to train black pilots – courtesy of rural signs commemorating the historic group, as reported by the News Gazette.
