The average fuel economy of new vehicles sold in the US last month slid to its lowest level of the year as consumers continue buying big SUVs and pickups. Average fuel economy was 25 miles/gallon, says the University of Michigan Eco-Driving Index.

22% of people traded in their hybrids and electric vehicles for an SUV this year, up sharply from last year, and doubling the rate of three years ago. So-called loyalty rates for alternative-fuel vehicles have fallen below 50% due to the lower price of gas, according to Edmunds.com.

FUEL EFFICIENT LOAN PROGRAM REVIVED

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) revived a controversial loan program meant to help automakers and their supply chain finance investments in fuel-efficient vehicles. DOE, announced a $259 million loan to Alcoa Inc. The company will produce high-strength aluminum for North American automakers looking to reduce the weight of vehicles.
