FAIR BANS

Iowa will join Minnesota, New York and other states in banning chickens, turkeys and other poultry from state and county fairs to prevent the spread of bird flu this summer.

AVIAN FLU IMPACTS

The primary price impact of the Avian Flu outbreak is on eggs (“white eggs in carton”, “dried eggs”, “liquid eggs”, and “frozen eggs”). USDA Market News reports indicate that shell egg prices have risen 20% since mid-April in the Midwest.  Smaller price impacts are being felt on turkey and chicken meat, IFB’s Mike Doherty says.

MINNESOTA FINDS 3RD BIRD FLU INFECTION IN COMMERCIAL POULTRY

The U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed the third infection of a virulent strain of avian flu in a commercial poultry flock in Minnesota, the nation’s top turkey-producing state on Saturday. A case of H5N2 flu was found in a flock of 39,000 turkeys in Stearns County, Reuters reports.
