MORE CUTTING CORD ON HOME BROADBAND

Americans continue to shun home broadband and use mobile phones instead for Internet access, survey results released this week by the Pew Research Center finds.  The survey also found that 80% of U.S. adults had Internet access this year, whether through a smartphone or a home Internet connection, up from 78% two years ago.

TECH TRENDS

The average time spent by adults (18+) using an app on the web or their smartphones has doubled in two years, going from 36 minutes per day during 2013 to 1 hour and 6 minutes during this year,  according to Nielsen’s annual Total Audience Report.

APPLE RIDING IPHONE’S SUCCESS

Wall Street analysts estimate another powerhouse performance from Apple when it reports its quarterly financial results Tuesday. Analysts estimate Apple will report a hefty $10.3 billion in profit after selling $49 billion worth of iPhones.

Walgreens expects to reach about half the country by the end of the year with a new service that lets people see doctors for minor ailments without leaving home, through smartphone, tablet or computer.

BIN RESCUE APP

The Illinois Corn Marketing Board and the Grain and Feed Association of Illinois teamed up to create an app that will locate the nearest grain rescue tube. TECH UPDATE

According to Flurry, Apple phones accounted for 51% of Christmas week activations, while Samsung accounted for only about a third that many, at 17%. Microsoft’s Lumia line had a pretty decent Christmas, finishing in third place with almost 6% of new activations.

MOBILE NEWS SNACKING

Although consumers spend an average of 2.5 hours a day poking at their smartphones, research shows that the time typically is divided into 150 sessions per day. This makes for an average session time of less than half a minute to snag someone’s attention.

SMARTPHONE UPDATE

– 169 million people in the U.S. owned smartphones (70% mobile market penetration) during the three months ending in May, up 4 percent since February. Apple ranked as the top OEM with 41.9 percent of U.S. smartphone subscribers. Samsung ranked second with 27.8 percent market share.
