BASF TO BUY SEED, HERBICIDE BUSINESS

BASF has agreed to buy seed and herbicide business from Bayer for $7 billion in cash. The deal comes as Bayer tries to convince regulatory authorities to approve its planned buyout of Monsanto. Bayer said it would use the proceeds to partly refinance the Monsanto acquisition. (Reuters)

VIPTERA FOLLOWUP

ENLIST GETS USDA OK

The seeds in Dow’s Enlist system—genetically modified corn and soybeans—won approval for commercial use last week from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The fate of the product lies with the Environmental Protection Agency, which must approve Dow’s Enlist Duo herbicide before the system can be successfully marketed.

DuPONT UPDATE

Activist investor Nelson Peltz is calling for a split-up of DuPont.  Peltz sent the board a letter and white paper giving suggestions on how he thinks the chemicals-and-seed company “could significantly improve…financial performance” and double the stock price within 3 years.  DuPont/Pioneer seeds is owned by DuPont.
