You can lead a child to vegetables, but it appears you can’t make them eat. Researchers videotaped 498 children during school lunch before and after new USDA vegetable rules were imposed. Children were throwing out the required foods at a rate 35% higher than before the rules were instituted.

SCHOOLS CHOOSE ANTIBIOTIC-FREE

SCHOOL LUNCHES

The National School Board Association’s survey of school leaders shows that since new nutrition rules for school lunches went into effect in 2010, 83.7 percent of school districts saw an increase in plate waste, 81.8 percent had an increase in cost and 76.5 percent saw a decrease in participation by students.

LUNCH POLL

A new survey finds 72 percent of parents of school-age children supported strong school nutrition standards. It also found 91 percent favor requiring schools to include a serving of fruit or vegetables in every meal and 75 percent think salt should be limited.

First lady Michelle Obama on Monday blasted back at critics of her school lunch program, arguing parents should ensure their children eat healthy meals. Obama said parents and school leaders can’t let children make the call to eat pizza and burgers for lunch every day.

– The U.S. Department of Agriculture loosened a rule Tuesday on some whole-grain foods that was expected to apply to the school-meals program starting this coming school year, after local education officials complained that the regulations were impractical.
