MPP UPDATE

More than half of the nation’s dairy farms have signed up for the new Margin Protection Program that was created by the 2014 farm bill to protect producer incomes from spikes in feed costs and collapses in milk prices. About 59% of production is covered by the program, USDA says.

ARC PAYMENTS?

Ag economist Brent Gloy says  it is quite likely that crop yields for many counties will be high this year, although crop prices are well below the 5 year Olympic average for both corn and soybeans. How high these yields are set will greatly influence ARC-County payments.

MPP DEADLINE EXTENDED

U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has announced that the application deadline for the dairy Margin Protection Program (MPP) will be extended until Dec. 19, 2014.

ALSO CONFUSING

DTN’s latest online poll shows it’s good growers won’t need to make farm bill elections until March. Many producers remain perplexed or undecided on which farm bill option they are likely to elect on the majority of their acres, given what they know now about price projections and yields now.

APH YIELD EXCLUSION

USDA will implement its new APH Yield Exclusion for farmers next year. Spring crops eligible for APH Yield Exclusion include corn, soybeans, wheat, cotton, grain sorghum, rice, barley, canola, sunflowers, peanuts, and popcorn. RMA UPDATE

USDA’s Risk Management Agency (RMA) has announced that a premium subsidy has been established as part of the new Whole-Farm Revenue Protection insurance policy, in order to offer more affordable protection to diversified farms.

SIGNUP TIMELINES

USDA has posted timelines for signups for the various options in the new farm bill. From now until Feb. 27, 2015, you can reallocate base acres and update yields.  From Nov. 17 until March 31, 2015, you can make your ARC/PLC election.
