LOW-CAL FARE

Large U.S.-based chain restaurants that voluntarily list calorie counts on their menus average nearly 140 fewer calories per item than those that do not post the information, a new Johns Hopkins/ Bloomberg School of Public Health-led research suggests.

McDONALD’S ALL-DAY BREAKFAST

McDonald’s plan to sell breakfast sandwiches throughout the day has delighted many customers, but the move risks exacerbating egg-supply woes in the U.S.  Crain’s Chicago reports restaurants and other food companies have already been struggling to get enough eggs following the worst outbreak of bird flu in U.S. history.

From San Diego-based burger joint Jack In The Box to comeback chicken chain Popeye’s, 14 restaurant chains posted at least 5% growth in the latest quarter. Top three include: Domino’s Pizza, Shake Shack, and Chipotle.

McDONALD’S WOES

Today’s Wall Street Journal reports pessimism has grown among some McDonald’s franchisees about the fast-food giant’s efforts to reverse lagging sales and rebuild its damaged image. The franchisees are not happy with recent actions, including plans to curtail antibiotic use in chickens.

SOFRITAS

Chipotle restaurants in Kansas City are now offering sofritas, a shredded organic tofu that is cooked with chilies and spices. The mixture, which can be used in burritos or tacos, is made with GMO-free tofu. The new menu item is targeted for vegans.
