RURAL VIEW

More people are finding work but job totals in rural America remain below pre-recession levels, says the USDA in “Rural America at a Glance,” an annual digest of the rural economy. “Rural areas continue to experience population loss, higher poverty rates, and lower educational attainment than urban areas.”

RURAL POVERTY

1 out of every 6 rural Americans – more than 8.2 million people – lives in poverty, according to a report by the Census Bureau. The rural poverty rate of 16.5% for 2014 was not statistically different than the 2013 rate.

WHO’S WELL OFF

On a global scale, the vast majority of Americans are either upper-middle income or high income. And many Americans who are classified as “poor” by the U.S. government would be middle income globally, according to a new Pew Research Center analysis.
