EGG PRICES HIT BOTTOM

Egg supplies in the U.S. have surged so much in recent months that prices are the lowest for this time of year in at least a decade. The USDA is predicting egg costs will drop another 6 percent this year, and will drop more than any other food group in 2017. (Bloomberg)

RANCHERS SUE USDA

CAGE-FREE EGGS

Costco says that it has already made major strides toward a cage-free egg supply: In 2006, only 2% of the eggs it sold were cage-free, now 26% are. Meanwhile, Subway announced this week it’s started its 10-year transition to cage-free eggs.

CAGE-FREE UPDATE

General Mills will use cage-free eggs by 2025. The Minnesota-based company, whose brands include Betty Crocker, Pillsbury, Progresso soups and Yoplait yogurt, initially announced its plans to go cage-free in July, but updated its animal welfare policy Tuesday to establish a 10-year time frame.

PANERA GOING CAGE-FREE

Within five years, Panera Bread Co. says its U.S. restaurants will stop using eggs from hens confined in cages. Panera said that by 2020, its menu would move to 100 percent cage-free, following other restaurant chains including McDonald’s and Starbucks that have made similar pledges in recent weeks.

STARBUCKS GOES CAGE-FREE

Starbucks will switch to using only eggs laid by cage-free chickens at its North American locations within five years, the company told Reuters on Thursday. The pledge follows similar moves by McDonald’s, Burger King, and food services company Sodexo SA.
