CHINA PORK PRICES

The pickup in China’s consumer inflationary rate was mainly due to a recent increase in pork prices which jumped 19.6% from a year ago.

MEAT MERGER

Poultry company Perdue Farms will buy natural meat maker Niman Ranch, which is Chipotle Mexican Grill’s biggest pork supplier. The acquisition was announced Tuesday.

PORK EXPORTS TO CHINA RISE

Smithfield Foods Inc., the world’s largest pork producer, increased shipments to China by 45% in the first half of this year, Chief Financial Officer Kenneth Sullivan said.

Pork continues to be the fastest-growing protein for the foodservice industry over the last four years, according to a new study by Chicago-based Technomic Inc. affiliated with the National Pork Board’s Pork Checkoff program.

PORK CONSOLIDATION

Brazil’s JBS S.A, the world’s largest meatpacker, said Wednesday that its U.S-based subsidiary Swift Pork Co. has entered in an agreement to buy Cargill Inc.’s pork businesses in the U.S. for $1.45 billion. That includes the firm’s Beardstown processing plant.
