SAVE THE MONARCHS

A new bill proposing a special Illinois license plate to help preserve the monarch butterfly has been proposed in the Illinois state Senate. The plan by state Sen. Melinda Bush, D-Grayslake, is to allow motorists to pay a surcharge for stickers to show support for the monarch, the offical insect of Illinois.

The number of monarch butterflies reaching their wintering grounds in central Mexico this year may be three or four times higher than the previous year, authorities said Thursday. Meanwhile, a researcher with Bayer says U.S. honey bee colonies could be in for a bad winter.

BEE LOSSES

Nearly 4 of every 10 colonies of honey bees die annually, a markedly high rate, according to USDA surveys of beekeepers. The rate hit 42% in 2014-15, the second time in three years that losses exceeded 40%. Illinois is asking growers and beekeepers to register on Driftwatch.
