For news outlets, it’s a mobile world. More readers now come from mobile devices than computers for 39 of the top 50 digital news sites. Growth in mobile ad spending outpaced all other platforms, influencing publishers’ decisions on a wide range of editorial and advertising strategies, according to a new Pew Research Center study.

TECH UPDATE

Cablevision is getting ready to pick a fight with your mobile phone company.  Next month, the cable operator is going to introduce a low-cost mobile phone service dubbed Freewheel that’s based entirely on Wi-Fi connectivity. If it works, expect other companies to follow.

Based on eMarketer’s latest forecast of digital and mobile travel researching and booking, 128.8 million people in the US will research travel on the internet this year, or 63.0% of internet users. Of that group, 47.4% will do so via mobile.

More than 50% teenagers use voice search every day and 56% of adults say using voice search makes them feel “tech savvy,” Google reports in its Mobile Voice study. Top uses for voice search are directions, making a call, searching for a recipe.

 Netflix wants to boost its mobile audience and plans to make shorter, bite-sized videos to do it. According to Gigaom, the streaming media company plans to create 2-5 minute video clips specifically targeted at mobile viewers.

SLOW DOWN AVOIDED

Verizon said Wednesday it will not implement its plan to slow speeds for customers with unlimited data plans when its 4G LTE network is at its most congested. That policy was to take effect today.
