MEDIA TRENDS

A new survey of country #radio listeners finds most don’t wake up to the radio. Edison Research reports that 45% wake up each day to the alarm on a mobile device, while 33% use a traditional alarm, and 16% use an alarm set to wake them up with radio.

MEDIA TRENDS

Digital spending on advertising was up 30% in January, compared to the same month one year ago and digital now has a 27% share of overall U.S. advertising dollars, up from a 19% share two years ago. Radio advertising was down 6%, according to Standard Media Index.

DIGITAL NEWS

Since launching in November, CBS News has been the top ranked news channel on Roku. “CBSN” (the name of CBS News’ digital initiative) led all news channels in terms of hours streamed on the over-the-top platform.

BOOK TRENDS

In 2013, the average household spent almost as much on digital book readers ($30.18) as it did on books ($32.53). Since 2000, average household spending on books has fallen 58 percent, after adjusting for inflation — almost as steep a decline as the 65 percent plunge in spending on newspaper and magazine subscriptions.

LISTENING SHIFT

American teens now spend more time with streaming audio services such as Pandora and Spotify than they do with AM/FM radio (including both over-the-air and the online streams of AM/FM stations), according to the fall 2014 “Share of Ear” report, new research from Edison Research.

MOBILE PAPERS

Research for Nov. 2014 conducted by The Search Agency found U.S. print news and media companies have embraced mobile sites, but speed remains an issue. None of the sites studied were able to meet Google’s recommendation for a five-second load time.
