FEWER JOBS

Illinois lost over 16,000 jobs in December and the unemployment rate rose to 5.9%, according to the latest jobs numbers from the Illinois Department of Employment Security. Over the entire year, Illinois saw 3,000 less jobs than at the start of 2015.

U.S. GAINS 292,000 NEW JOBS IN DECEMBER

The United States scored big with almost 300,000 news jobs in December. This is the fifth straight year in which employment grew by at least 2 million to power a growing economy.

RURAL VIEW

More people are finding work but job totals in rural America remain below pre-recession levels, says the USDA in “Rural America at a Glance,” an annual digest of the rural economy. “Rural areas continue to experience population loss, higher poverty rates, and lower educational attainment than urban areas.”

NEW JOBS AHEAD

There will be 57,900 annual job openings in food, agriculture, renewable natural resources, and environment fields between 2015 and 2020, according to new data from the USDA.

SHIFT IN JOBS

The New York Times reports the types of jobs that pay middle-class wages have shifted since 1980. Fewer of these positions are in male-dominated production occupations, while a greater share are in workplaces more open to women.
