Netflix’s share of Internet traffic is exploding. The streaming service now accounts for 36.5% of all bandwidth consumed by North American Web users during primetime, according to the Canada-based network firm Sandvine.

Two-thirds of a generation into the Internet, there were 2.8 billion users as of 2014, up from 35 million in 1995, according to venture capitalist Mary Meeker in her annual State of the Internet report this week.

AT&T has signed up 8 automaker partners, including General Motors, Audi and Ford, to hook up cars with Internet access. The goal is to offer free or paid content exclusively for connected car users.

BROADBAND OPPORTUNITY COUNCIL

USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack and Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker will head the collaboration of 25 government agencies and departments dedicated to advancing rural broadband service, the White House announced Monday. “Broadband access is as key to economic success today as electricity was in the 20th Century,” Vilsack said.

TECH UPDATE

The Federal Communications Commission on Thursday voted in favor of so-called net neutrality rules.  That means the Web would be regulated much like utilities, so no one party would receive preferential treatment.

Next-generation #Internet network 50 times faster than what is currently available will make Carbondale the region’s first “Gigabit City”. The City of Carbondale, SIU, Frontier Communications Partnership for a Connected Illinois and Connect SI have completed the first phase of a more reliable and faster Internet network.

A MORE CIVIL WEB

A recent Pew Research Center study found that roughly one-in-five (22%) internet users that have been victims of online harassment reported that their last experience occurred in the comments section of a website. Many companies are now removing comments from their websites.

KILLER APPS

 Pew Research has just released a study on “Killer Apps in the Gigabit Age.” It looks at how the Internet will look like in 2025 and beyond.  One futurist says there will be no apps by then.

CAR TECH

Internet connectivity is really catching on with the younger the car buyers, according to McKinsey. 65 percent of 18-34 year olds surveyed considered connectivity an important factor to consider when buying a vehicle. That compares with 43 percent for those ages 35-54 years old, and just 18 percent for those 55-74 years old.
