ACTION REQUEST ON GMO LABELING

The Senate is expected to take action by Thursday on S. 2609, a national biotech labeling bill. We need farmers to call or email Senator Durbin and Senator Kirk to support consistent, accurate and national food labels. We need the Senate to pass S. 2609 now!

GMO SUMMIT MEETING

The food industry, consumer groups and other stakeholders in the debate over how to label products containing genetically modified ingredients are expected to be summoned to the Agriculture Department early next month to try to resolve the contentious issue. USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack wants to avoid “chaos in the market.”

MEAT LABELS

The fate of the country-of-origin labeling law for meat is hanging on a massive spending bill that could be released on Monday, and the food industry has been clinging to hopes that a measure preempting state GMO labeling laws also could be included.

GMO LABELING

Both the Washington Post and National Geographic have editorials saying GMO labeling is unnecessary. “Mandated labeling would deter the purchase of genetically modified (GM) food when the evidence calls for no such caution,” says today’s Washington Post. National Geographic in its March edition says “there’s no evidence that GMOs are harmful to human health.”

GMO LABELS

Vermont’s attorney general has asked the U.S. District Court for the District of Vermont to dismiss a lawsuit by a group of food manufacturer trade associations to overturn Vermont’s law requiring labels on genetically modified food beginning in July 2016.
