BEN & JERRY’S INKS MIGRANT WORKER DEAL

#Vermont-based ice cream maker Ben & Jerry’s Tuesday signed an agreement with a farmworker’s group that establishes labor standards for the company’s suppliers in the state. The agreement, which outlines acceptable housing conditions, compensation and time off, also creates an enforcement strategy that encourages workers to speak up about violations. (New York Times)

U.S. FARMS ADD MORE FOREIGN WORKERS

U.S. farms are bringing in more foreign-born guest workers to plant and harvest the country’s crops under the H-2A visa program. USDA ON-FARM LABOR SURVEY

During the second half of April, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will conduct its semi-annual Agricultural Labor Survey. The survey will collect information about hired labor from more than 380 Illinois farmers and ranchers. Survey results to be released on May 21.
