TANK CAR RULES

U.S. and Canadian transportation regulators will issue tough new rules for railroads hauling crude oil and ethanol that require trains be equipped with faster-acting electronic brake systems. Tank cars will also need to be sturdier than current models, according to The Wall Street Journal report.

RFS EDITORIAL

USA Today editorial says the Renewable Fuel Standard should be ended. The newspaper says RFS is a mandate that Americans put billions of gallons of corn-based ethanol into their gas tanks each year even though they don’t want it and it makes no practical sense.

EPA SAYS IT’S SORRY

By this spring, @EPA officials believe they will be in a position to release #RenewableFuelStandard (RFS) targets for 2014, 2015, and 2016 compliance years. EPA did note their challenges include the blend wall and flat gasoline demand.

ETHANOL UPDATE

Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., introduced two bills Wednesday. One would eliminate the Renewable Fuel Standard altogether, and a second would cap corn ethanol’s market at 10%.

ETHANOL MARGINS SQUEEZED

Archer Daniels Midland on Tuesday said ethanol producers will have to cut output amid high stocks and stagnating demand, as the industry’s woes deepen with the oil rout and squeezed margins. ADM was still booking ethanol profits, but pressured margins are leaving higher-cost producers with “some problems,” ADM CEO Juan Luciano said.

ETHANOL MERGER

Pekin-based Aventine Renewable Energy Holdings Inc. has merged with Pacific Ethanol Inc., a Sacramento, Calif.-based producer and marketer of renewable fuels. The transaction will establish Pacific Ethanol as the fifth largest producer and marketer of ethanol in the United States.

Transportation Coalition

Transportation for Illinois coalition in Springfield today presented its funding source for a capital plan.  It includes higher fuel taxes, ending ethanol credit. The coalition wants to raise the state gas tax 4 cents, diesel tax up 7 cents, plus raise vehicle registration fees and tax repairs & oil changes.
