CHINA AND ETHANOL

GROWMARK Energy says China has been increasing ethanol imports from both the U.S. and Brazil, but the volume has not been stable. It is believed they are using most of it to blend into gasoline.

RFS HEARING

 Over 250 stakeholders in the Renewable Fuel Standard testified at a public hearing in Kansas City on Thursday, most of them corn farmers and ethanol producers who say the EPA is setting standards lower than the law requires.

RFS HEARING

The Environmental Protection Agency is holding a hearing in Kansas City, Kansas, on its proposed Renewable Fuel Standard volumes for 2014 through 2016. Farm Bureau members from Nebraska, Iowa and Illinois will be providing in-person testimony at the hearing.

ETHANOL RETURNS TO RAILS

Sinking lease rates, weak crude prices and tough new safety measures for transporting oil by rail have spurred a resurgence in hauling ethanol on the U.S. rail network, as some train companies convert tank cars to carry more corn-based biofuels.

“The demand for corn for ethanol production appears to be on solid footing for the next 18 months,” says U of I economist Darrel Good. “While growth may be limited, a setback is not expected,” he says.

ETHANOL PURCHASE

CHS has purchased Patriot Renewable Fuels’ Illinois ethanol plant in Annawan. The cooperative bought its first ethanol plant, a 133 million-gallon facility in Rochelle, Illinois, last year. CHS is one of the largest merchandisers of distillers’ grains.

RFS TARGETS

U.S. regulators unveiled much-anticipated targets for the blending of renewable fuels into motor fuel for the three years to 2016, proposing some 17.4 billion gallons of renewable fuels must be used in gasoline or diesel next year.
