PESTICIDE BAN

EPA has proposed a total ban on the insecticide chlorpyrifos (Dursban/Lorsban) for agricultural uses, saying it has been unable to make a safety finding as required under the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA) by a court-imposed Oct. 31 deadline.

WOTUS BLOCKED

A federal appeals court in Cincinnati issued a nationwide stay on EPA’s WOTUS rules Friday. “A stay temporarily silences the whirlwind of confusion that springs from uncertainty about the requirements of the new rule,” the court said in its ruling. More at FarmWeekNow.com.

EPA SAFETY RULES

New rules will prohibit children from handling pesticides and require farm workers to complete pesticide safety training more frequently, bolstering protections for 2 million U.S. farm laborers and their families, the EPA announced Monday.

FOOD WASTE

USDA and EPA officials on Wednesday announced a progressive goal to limit food waste in the U.S., pledging to pare it down by 50% before 2030. According to USDA, food loss and waste is single largest component of disposed U.S. municipal solid waste, and accounts for a significant portion of U.S. methane emissions.

EPA PROPOSED HUGE METHANE LIMITS

The Environmental Protection Agency released proposed standards Tuesday for reducing methane and other pollutants from oil and gas operations in the U.S.  The rules require extensive cutting of methane emissions, finding and repairing leaks at oil and gas wells and capturing natural gas emitted from hydraulic fracturing, USA Today reports.
