BIODIESEL KUDOS

Biodiesel reduces greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50% and often by as much as 81% vs. petroleum, the California Air Resources Board affirmed the figures in the state’s revised low carbon fuels standard (LCFS) finalized Sept. 25.

EPA PROPOSED HUGE METHANE LIMITS

The Environmental Protection Agency released proposed standards Tuesday for reducing methane and other pollutants from oil and gas operations in the U.S.  The rules require extensive cutting of methane emissions, finding and repairing leaks at oil and gas wells and capturing natural gas emitted from hydraulic fracturing, USA Today reports.

SCOTUS UPDATE

The US Supreme Court ruled Monday that the US Environmental Protection Agency lacks authority in some cases to force companies to evaluate ways to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The decision does not affect EPA proposals for first-time national standards for new and existing power plants.

EPA STRIKES AGAIN

The Environmental Protection Agency today released a draft rule to regulate carbon emissions from hundreds of fossil-fired power plants across the U.S. Coal-fired power plants currently produce 39% of the nation’s electricity. Plants fired by natural gas produced about 27%, nuclear plants 19%, and renewables including hydro, wind, and solar produced 13%.
