ELECTRIC MILESTONE

For decades, coal has been the dominant energy source for generating electricity in the United States. The EIA is now forecasting that 2016 will be the first year that natural gas-fired generation will exceed coal generation in the United States on an annual basis.

GRAIN BELT EXPRESS

The Illinois FarmBureau Board Thursday voted to intervene in a proposed high-voltage direct current overhead transmission line case before the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC). In counties along the proposed route, several county Farm Bureau boards oppose the project and requested IFB intervene.

POWER LINE RULING

The Illinois Commerce Commission last week granted Ameren eminent domain powers to proceed with its Illinois Rivers transmission line.  The ruling impacts properties between Meredosia and Ipava.  Commissioners approved a similar ruling for properties in Adams County in May. The power line would stretch from Quincy to the Indiana border at Terre Haute.

RURAL ELECTRICS OPPOSE EPA PLAN –

 AFBF and the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) issue reactions to EPA’s plan to cap power plant emissions by 2030, saying it would increase prices for electricity. Rural electric cooperatives that rely on old coal plants for cheap electricity would suffer if EPA implements the proposal.

EPA STRIKES AGAIN

The Environmental Protection Agency today released a draft rule to regulate carbon emissions from hundreds of fossil-fired power plants across the U.S. Coal-fired power plants currently produce 39% of the nation’s electricity. Plants fired by natural gas produced about 27%, nuclear plants 19%, and renewables including hydro, wind, and solar produced 13%.
