FED UNCHANGED

The Federal Reserve on Wednesday indicated it only expects two interest-rate increases in 2016, half as many as in its December projection. The Fed left interest rates unchanged this month.

DEFICIT NOT TOP ISSUE

A Pew Research survey finds 56% say that reducing the budget deficit should be a top priority for the president and Congress in 2016, down from 64% who said this last year. The general economy and terrorism are among the top issues these days.

TPP BENEFITS

A group supporting trade liberalization said the Trans-Pacific Partnership’s benefits to the U.S. economy outweigh adjustment costs. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the American Farm Bureau and other industry and farm groups have backed the deal.

U.S. GAINS 292,000 NEW JOBS IN DECEMBER

The United States scored big with almost 300,000 news jobs in December. This is the fifth straight year in which employment grew by at least 2 million to power a growing economy.

U.S. ECONOMY SET TO GROW LESS THAN 3% FOR THE 10TH STRAIGHT YEAR

The U.S. economy expanded at a mild 2% pace in the third quarter (from July to September). The gross domestic product grew at a 3.9% in the second quarter. The small downgrade was triggered by a larger trade deficit and a smaller buildup in inventories.

More people are finding work but job totals in rural America remain below pre-recession levels, says the USDA in “Rural America at a Glance,” an annual digest of the rural economy. “Rural areas continue to experience population loss, higher poverty rates, and lower educational attainment than urban areas.”
