FATE OF #NAFTA HINGES ON #MILK

#FARMERS GO AFTER ‘FEAR-BASED’ MARKETING

The National Milk Producers Federation is going after ‘fear-based’ marketing and false labels in its new “Peel Back the Label” campaign. The group is urging companies to stop using labels such as “GMO-free,” saying such slogans are raising fears unnecessarily about things like GMO products, synthetic animal-growth hormones and high fructose corn syrup. PRAIRE FARMS TO ACQUIRE SWISS VALLEY

Prairie Farms Dairy and Swiss Valley Farms officials announced Friday plans to merge the farmer-owned dairy cooperatives. Prairie Farms will combine the assets of Swiss Valley Farms into Prairie Farms Dairy Inc. The terms of the merge agreement must be approved by each company’s co-op members, (Cedar Rapids Gazette, 12/16).

The Washington Post says a new study finds that certain foods are addictive because of the way they are processed, among them is cheese. The more processed and fatty the food, the more it was associated with addictive eating behaviors.

TPP DEAL REACHED

Negotiators say they’ve reached an agreement on the Trans-Pacific Partnership. Among the deals reached under the Trans-Pacific Partnership, Canada and Japan agreed to increase access to their tightly controlled dairy markets, allowing in some American dairy products. President Obama and USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack will promote TPP Tuesday during a scheduled appearance at USDA headquarters.
