FAPRI PROJECTIONS

The Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute (FAPRI) has released a new snapshot updating its five-year outlook for crop prices. The report incorporates USDA data from mid-September that suggest bigger corn and soybean crops than previously estimated – and lower projected prices.

HARVEST OUTLOOK

Basis premiums are still being paid in some areas, but are not likely to last long with fairly dry & warm weather seen for Illinois and the mid-South over the next week.  The latest 8-14 day outlook maps also have a dry and warm bias – just what the doctor ordered.

NEGATIVE RETURNS

Farmdoc says farmer returns are projected to be negative in 2014, the first time negative returns occurred in the 2000s. The June 30th USDA reports suggest lower prices, which did not improve the return outlook.  Negative returns became a higher probability after the June 30th reports, says farm management specialist Gary Schnitkey.

PRICEY BBQ

The inaugural 2014 Rabobank BBQ Index examines the composition of a ten-person barbecue and how rising commodity prices have impacted the cost over the years, showing an overall price increase from $51.90 in 2004 to $55.62 during the financial crisis in 2007, to a total of $66.82 in 2014.
