ELECTRIC MILESTONE

For decades, coal has been the dominant energy source for generating electricity in the United States. The EIA is now forecasting that 2016 will be the first year that natural gas-fired generation will exceed coal generation in the United States on an annual basis.

PEABODY ENERGY

St. Louis-based coal miner Peabody Energy Corp may soon be bankrupt. Peabody said it had a substantial loss from operations and negative cash flow in 2015 and it expects to continue losing money this year.

BEIJING GOES FOR COAL

EPA STRIKES AGAIN

The Environmental Protection Agency today released a draft rule to regulate carbon emissions from hundreds of fossil-fired power plants across the U.S. Coal-fired power plants currently produce 39% of the nation’s electricity. Plants fired by natural gas produced about 27%, nuclear plants 19%, and renewables including hydro, wind, and solar produced 13%.
