CHINESE CHICKEN

The Department of Agriculture will allow Chinese poultry processing companies to ship fully cooked, frozen and refrigerated chicken to the United States.

MEAT LABELS

According to a Washington Post blog, grocery store chain Giant recently tried labeling some raw meat cuts simply “USDA Graded” instead of indicating the grade quality (Prime/Choice/Select). Giant’s corporate parent, Ahold USA, was ordered to stop the practice by USDA.

ANTIBIOTIC-FREE

Perdue Foods announced today that it has removed all antibiotics from its chicken hatcheries, a move that took five years to implement and goes above and beyond USDA and FDA voluntary guidelines.

CHICKEN DEAL

Pilgrim’s Pride, the nation’s second largest poultry integrator, says it has agreed to buy all poultry facilities in Mexico from Tyson Foods, the No. 1 poultry processor, in a cash transaction valued at $400 million.

MEAT TRENDS

LaSalle Street News reports pork is going to be featured more actively into Father’s Day.  The recent price declines in fresh pork gave retailers some better feature opportunities than for beef.  Chicken remains the standout feature, however, and will be the main competitor for the consumer’s dollar this summer.
