TOPS IN CEREAL

FoodNavigator.com has released its top 10 list of breakfast cereals for 2014.  Number-one is Honey Nut Cheerios, followed by Frosted Flakes and Honey Bunches of Oats.

CEREAL SNACKING

Cereal companies are zeroing in on behaviors they largely ignored in the past: what they call off-breakfast eating. That means adults eating cereal at night or children snacking on it throughout the day. HIGH PROTEIN

General Mills says it will begin selling Cheerios Protein, a high-protein version of its top-selling cereal. The company hopes to woo consumers who have dropped cereal for yogurt and other protein-rich breakfasts

CEREAL DECLINES

Kellogg’s reports that its cereal sales have declined 5.5% this year, as consumers reach for Greek yogurt and breakfast sandwiches.  Both Kellogg’s and General Mills are developing new strategies to make ready-to-eat cereal more attractive.
