PORK CONSOLIDATION

Brazil’s JBS S.A, the world’s largest meatpacker, said Wednesday that its U.S-based subsidiary Swift Pork Co. has entered in an agreement to buy Cargill Inc.’s pork businesses in the U.S. for $1.45 billion. That includes the firm’s Beardstown processing plant.

GROUP HOUSING

Cargill, one of the largest pork producers in the U.S., is continuing its commitment of moving to group housing for its sows that produce hogs for pork. Company owned-facilities will be 100% group housing by the end of calendar 2015.

CARGILL LOSSES

Cargill today cited a trading loss in US electricity market, weather disruptions in rail grain markets, and rejection of US corn shipments by China over biotech safety concerns as reasons for a 28% decline in fiscal 3Q earnings.
