ETHANOL RETURNS TO RAILS

Sinking lease rates, weak crude prices and tough new safety measures for transporting oil by rail have spurred a resurgence in hauling ethanol on the U.S. rail network, as some train companies convert tank cars to carry more corn-based biofuels.

ETHANOL PURCHASE

CHS has purchased Patriot Renewable Fuels’ Illinois ethanol plant in Annawan. The cooperative bought its first ethanol plant, a 133 million-gallon facility in Rochelle, Illinois, last year. CHS is one of the largest merchandisers of distillers’ grains.

RFS TARGETS

U.S. regulators unveiled much-anticipated targets for the blending of renewable fuels into motor fuel for the three years to 2016, proposing some 17.4 billion gallons of renewable fuels must be used in gasoline or diesel next year. RFS UPDATE

Prices of U.S. renewable fuel credits for compliance with the government’s biofuels program dropped Thursday, as the market quieted by political uncertainty showed its first signs of life in months ahead of a government proposal on use requirements.

ETHANOL UPDATE

Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., introduced two bills Wednesday. One would eliminate the Renewable Fuel Standard altogether, and a second would cap corn ethanol’s market at 10%.

ETHANOL MERGER

Pekin-based Aventine Renewable Energy Holdings Inc. has merged with Pacific Ethanol Inc., a Sacramento, Calif.-based producer and marketer of renewable fuels. The transaction will establish Pacific Ethanol as the fifth largest producer and marketer of ethanol in the United States.
