Three out of four producers support the beef checkoff, while the number who disapprove of the program, at just 11 percent, is the lowest in program history, according to a recent survey of 1,209 beef and dairy producers nationwide. IFB supports the upcoming Illinois beef checkoff vote.

BEEF CHECKOFF

Under a new attempt for harmony over the beef checkoff program, the proposed $2 per head fee would be put to a nationwide referendum among cattle producers, says DTN. The $2 checkoff would be double the current rate and would require congressional action.

MORE PORK, LESS BEEF

Pork production is poised to surpass beef production next year as ranchers try to rebuild their herds from the lowest levels since the 1960s. Bob Young, chief economist at the American Farm Bureau Federation, says that this would be the first time since the 1950s pork production topped beef production in the U.S.

MEAT LABELS

According to a Washington Post blog, grocery store chain Giant recently tried labeling some raw meat cuts simply “USDA Graded” instead of indicating the grade quality (Prime/Choice/Select). Giant’s corporate parent, Ahold USA, was ordered to stop the practice by USDA.

RISING BEEF PRODUCER

 Paraguay is now the world’s eighth top beef exporter, according to US government figures, ahead of meat superpowers such as Argentina (11th), but their aim is to be number five by 2020 and to have 20 million head of cattle available in that year alone.

EAT BEEF

A new research study, funded by the beef checkoff and Penn State General Clinical Research Center, published in the June 19, 2014 issue of Journal of Human Hypertension, shows that a heart-healthy diet that includes lean beef can reduce risk factors for heart disease.

MEAT TRENDS

LaSalle Street News reports pork is going to be featured more actively into Father’s Day.  The recent price declines in fresh pork gave retailers some better feature opportunities than for beef.  Chicken remains the standout feature, however, and will be the main competitor for the consumer’s dollar this summer.
