ACREAGE FORECAST

U.S. farmers will expand their plantings of corn by nearly 3% in 2016 while scaling back slightly on soybeans, according to a survey of growers released by Illinois-based research and brokerage firm Allendale Inc.

AT RISK ACRES

Up to 8.6 million acres of #corn and 19.3 million acres of #soybeans are at risk, due to the weather, U of I ag economist John Newton says . That’s 10% of expected corn acres and 23% of expected soybean acres.  We’ll know more after June 30, when USDA issues its acreage report.

Farmers will plant a record 87.2 million soybean acres in 2015 and corn will likely total 88.7 million acres, according to Informa Economics. Report Preview

Analysts surveyed by Dow Jones expect the USDA to forecast that farmers will plant 92.902 million acres of corn, down from 95.365 million last year. Soybean acreage is expected to rise to 81.369 million versus 76.533 million in 2013.  We’ll have updated figures Monday morning on FarmWeekNow.com.

CROP ACRES TO DECLINE

USDA forecasts that farmers will scale back plantings of the 8 major field crops by nearly 5% – a total of 12.3 million acres – over the next 5 years in response to sustained, lower commodity prices. The biggest cutbacks will be in wheat and soybeans.

SOUTH AMERICAN UPDATE
