Writer Cynthia Ryan talks about the difficulties of long-distance farming in a recent LA Times op ed. Ryan, who is originally from DeWitt County, is taking on the management of her parents’ farm and tenant farmers, despite her own family residing in Birmingham, Ala. “For four generations, Ryans have lived and worked in DeWitt County,” Ryan said. “From a logistical standpoint, I wonder if it’s possible for me, a fifth-generation heir who lives 600 miles away, to call myself a farmer.”
