AGING FARMERS

About 12 percent of farmers are older than 75, according to the most recent Census of Agriculture, with the average age steadily increasing since the 1980s. For many farmers, getting out is tough. But getting in might be even tougher: “Somewhat related, the capital costs to enter into farming are quite high, which can be challenging for young farmers, particularly if they don’t have a family that’s part of farming,” said Chris Magnuson, executive director of operations, News & Communications, IFB.
