VOLUNTEER FDs STRUGGLE TO FILL NEED

About seven out of 10 American firefighters volunteer their services for small, rural fire departments and many of those departments are barely hanging on. According to the National Volunteer Fire Council, about a third of small town volunteer firefighters are now over 50 – double the number in the 1980s. What’s more, volunteer departments are having trouble recruiting the members needed to staff firehouses because rural populations continue to shrink. (NPR)
