HONEYBEE NUMBERS ON THE RISE

The number of U.S. honeybee colonies rose 3% to 2.89 million as of April 1, compared with 2.8 million a year earlier, according to the USDA. The agency said the increase was due to beekeepers adding more bees to make up for previous years’ rapid losses, which have been attributed to parasites, disease, and colony collapse disorder potentially stemming from the use of neonicotinoid pesticides.
