The Peoria Stock Yards – one of the last of its kind in the Midwest – accepted its last shipment of livestock Dec. 23 and cased operations last week. The stock yards hosted as many as 7,000 hogs per day and up to 2,000 head of cattle on certain days in the 1970s. More recently, however, the stock yards accepted cattle only on Mondays and would receive only 10 to 15 animals. Hog numbers reached low triple digits, leading to razor-thin profit margins.
