64% of Americans have personally experienced a major data breach, and a large share of the public distrusts institutions charged with protecting data, a new Pew Research Center survey finds. Additionally, 41% of Americans have had fraudulent charges on their credit cards; 35% have received notices data may have been stolen; and 16% say someone has tried to take over their email accounts.
