CROPPING INSIGHTS FLOW FROM TILE-WATER TEST RESULTS

Five months of weekly water testing left Bureau County farmer Alan Madison thirsty for more data. Not only from his tile-drained fields near Walnut, but also, from other area farmers’ fields. Madison reasoned if more farmers joined the confidential testing effort, the information could be pooled.

With an IFB Nutrient Stewardship Grant, Bureau County Farm Bureau assisted the Northern Illinois Nutrient Management group in offering confidential tile-water nitrate testing for the first time. Madison faithfully tested samples weekly from mid-May through mid-September (FarmWeekNow.com).

McLean County is planning a similar project in 2017 in the Lake Evergreen Watershed. Click here to find out more.
